What are we learning?
Religion – The three topics that are to be covered this term are Loving, Vocation and Commitment, and Expectations. In the first topic the children will explore the term unconditional love and how they can show love.. In ‘vocation and Commitment the children hear about the ‘calling’ and how Commitment is very important in our faith and daily life. . In ‘Expectations’ they explore the expectation placed upon Mary and Joseph.. In EPR we will be focusing on the topic of relationships.
English –The range of texts for this term emphasises classic literature, poetry and drama by long established writers. The term starts with a study of The Odyssey which links with the history topic and continues with other classic myths and legends. In the second part of the term we will be identifying non-fiction features through newspaper reports relating to our Greek topic. The children will be encouraged to read non-fiction texts related to our topic for both their projects and their reading challenge. The children will be studying ‘Macbeth for their Shakespearian experience. Daily spelling activities will provide strategies for correct spelling. We will also be focusing on grammar and punctuation which will be taught discretely but also interwoven through our English lessons.
Maths – The term starts with place value, revision of the four operations and number work. During the term, there will be an emphasis on problem solving, involving real life problems, money and making decisions. Data handling, reasoning and generalising about shapes, time, capacity and ratio and proportion will also be covered. Year 6 pupils will have the opportunity to revisit topics they feel less confident with over the weeks leading up to the tests.
Science – The topics of Electricity and Evolution and Inheritance will be covered this term. In Electricity we will recap previous learning and create an electrical product. In Evolution and Inheritance, we will be focusing upon how we have evolved and the impact genetic inheritance has on us. This will include reproduction which will work in conjunction with our EPR work this term.
Topic – The children will learn about several different aspects of Ancient Greece alongside learning about maps. This is a mini topic coinciding with an independent project..
Computing – The children will be revising e-safety this term and using their knowledge to support others by designing and implementing their own smartphone apps.
Design & Technology – A day of technology at St. Wilfrid’s will take place, where the children will have the chance to use specialised cookery areas and their ICT facilities.
Games & P.E – Will take place on a Wednesday and Thursday, please make sure your child has his/her kit on those days. Correct footwear must be worn at all times. Please note that children will only be excused from taking part in this important area of the curriculum, if a letter is sent in from home.
Homework –Reading every night is statutory (20 minutes) and at least one piece of reading journal work must be produced each week. Reading journals will be collected on a Wednesday. Tables and spelling activities are ongoing. Year 6 will be set reading journal homework on a Wednesday, due on the following Monday. Maths homework will be set on a Wednesday
